How A24 Became a Vibe
The indie studio people follow like a band: Moonlight, Hereditary, Uncut Gems and seven Oscars for Everything Everywhere.
A studio people follow like a band
Most people can’t name the company behind a movie. With A24, they can. Founded in 2012 in New York, it backs distinctive directors and markets their films like cult events. People watch things just because they’re A24.
The hits
- Moonlight (2016): its first Best Picture winner, the year of the envelope mix-up.
- Lady Bird (2017): Greta Gerwig’s coming-of-age film.
- Hereditary (2018) and Midsommar (2019): Ari Aster’s slow, deeply unsettling horror, often called "elevated horror".
- Uncut Gems (2019): Adam Sandler at his most stressful, from the Safdie brothers.
- Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022): a multiverse movie about a laundromat owner that won seven Oscars, including Best Picture.
- Euphoria: A24 co-produces the HBO show too.
The A24 vibe
- Slow-burn horror that lingers.
- Sad, funny indie stories.
- Bold posters and trailers that feel like art.
- An online shop selling tote bags, candles and collectibles that fans actually buy.
Bigger swings
Lately A24 has gone bigger: Civil War (2024) was its biggest budget at the time, The Brutalist won Adrien Brody the Best Actor Oscar in 2025, and Marty Supreme starring Timothée Chalamet came out for Christmas 2025.
